Bangladesh’s apparel exports dropped in August 2018 from a flying end to fiscal 2017-18 and the starting month, July, of 2018-19. According to reports, the figures came when there was no export activity during the last 10 days of August.
According to latest data released from Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh exported apparel items worth US $ 2.71 billion worth in August. Compiled, for the first two months of 2018-19, the total apparel export fetched US $ 5.7 billion – a 3.8 per cent growth.
As analysed by Apparel Resources, knitwear fetched US $ 1.38 billion during August. In July-August 2018, knitwear brought in US $ 2.9 billion, a 1.5 per cent more (Y-to-Y basis) compared to US $ 1.26 billion of July 2017. This sector occupied 50 per cent of the total apparel export volume, surpassing the strategic export target by more than 6.8 per cent.
In July, knitwear fetched US $ 1.5 billion – 20 per cent more (Y-to-Y basis) compared to US $ 1.26 billion of July 2017. Back in June 2008, the amount was US $ 1.5 billion.
Woven products, on the other hand, fetched US $1.33 billion during August. In July-August 2018, the number was US $ 2.8 billion, what is 6.2 per cent more compared to last year. This sector too, contributed to almost 50 per cent of the total apparel export volume. In July, the woven category earned US $ 1.49 billion – 22 per cent more compared to the US $ 1.21 billion back in July 2017. In June 2018, it fetched US $ 1.8 billion.
Moving on to a holistic view, the apparel export of US $ 5.7 billion during July-August 2018 was 3.96 per cent more compared to the strategic target set at US $ 5.5 billion. The sector occupied 84.4 per cent of the total export amount of US $ 3.21 billion in August.
August’s total export receipt witnessed a – 11 per cent (negative) growth during August, in comparison to August 2017, and was 0.60 per cent short of the strategic target set at US $ 2.23 billion set by the government.
