In a move to attain the target of US $ 50 billion worth of apparel exports, Bangladesh’s commerce minister Tofail Ahmed announced the setting up of a “garment village” in Chittagong, which is a major export hub. This will be second of its kind, as the first one is already under construction in Bausia and has been funded by a state-owned Chinese firm. The Bausia village is expected to accommodate more than 200 factories and contribute US $ 5 billion worth export. With facilities for medical treatment, proper waste disposal, and day care, the Bausia village will provide a much safer environment for the garment workers than the current factories spread around the city in an unplanned manner.
