Amid the turbulence of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bangladesh’s garment industry has not only weathered the storm but has emerged stronger, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in sustainable and responsible business practices.
The sector faced significant setbacks, including a US $ 3.6 billion suspension of work orders for approximately a year, non-payment issues, and disruptions in demand and shipments.
Reflecting on the past couple of years, Faruque Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), acknowledged the unprecedented challenges the industry faced.
Uncertainty prevailed about the duration of the global recovery, the extent of the impact on the economy and trade, and the industry’s ability to persevere.
Despite the uncertainties, the sector rebounded, setting ambitious goals for the future. Hassan highlighted the industry’s target to achieve annual apparel exports worth US $ 100 billion by 2030, with a strong emphasis on sustainability even as the trade body prioritised workplace safety, acknowledging the crucial role of Government support in sustaining the sector.
