To secure the supply of fuel to meet the faltering power demand, which has impacted general life as well as the production of the industries including the readymade garment and textile sector, Bangladesh has decided to procure nine cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market for the second half of the year.
This is as per media reports, which have cited an official from the state-owned Petrobangla in this regard.
It may be mentioned here that Petrobangla has been tapping the market for spot imports since February even as an energy adviser to the Prime Minister had earlier maintained the country planned to buy up to 12 LNG cargoes in the first half of the year, including four that were awarded in June.
Bangladesh has lately been facing acute power shortages, to handle which, the authorities were said to be resorting to rationing power supply across the country.
