The much-awaited move to make an Apparel Zone in the Port City of Bangladesh, Chittagong, has finally received approval from the Government of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) have also agreed to do a project at Kalurghat industrial area which will be operational by 2018. It will house 11 garment factories with technologically advanced facilities.
The step was taken noting the increasing need of relocating the apparel factories in Chittagong which were on the verge of closure. The Apparel Zone will serve as a single largest manufacturing hub in Bangladesh which will be good for both entrepreneurs and RMG sector of the country.

The proposed Apparel Zone will be set up in 10.36 acres of land, and will be able to accommodate around 40 medium- to large-sized factories. Around 40 per cent of 700 garment factories in Chittagong need relocation. Therefore, BGMEA and CCC are planning to set up another garment village at Mirsarai Special Economic Zone.
Given the emerging challenges in the country, this restructuring of the entire readymade garment sector with essential facilities, will help it achieve US $ 50 billion export target by 2021.
