Once again, the heat is rising in Bangladesh’s crucial readymade garment industry, a leading contributor to the country’s export revenue as a fresh wave of work abstention has been announced by the Sammilita Sramik Parishad (SSP), an alliance comprising 10 labour rights organisations, scheduled to commence from 1st January next year.
This announcement comes just a month after Bangladesh grappled with a massive workers’ movement.
The SSP, in its call for action on Sunday, asserted solidarity from 19 workers’ rights groups and federations.
Their demands include the trial of those accountable for deaths during the recent wage hike movement, proper treatment for injured workers, the release of detained workers, reinstatement of dismissed workers, and a review of the announced wages in the garment sector to advocate for a minimum wage of Taka 25,000.
Campaigns initiated by the alliance’s activists have already begun in areas surrounding readymade garment factories in Gazipur, Ashulia, and Savar, with the distribution of leaflets among workers.
The organisers have pledged to continue these efforts until December 31.
