Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF), Africa’s largest cotton initiative has expanded its Cotton Made in Africa (CmiA) portfolio with the addition of CmiA Organic Cotton standard. The new standard has been formulated by combining the existing Eco Standard EC No. 834/2007 and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) with the social and economic criteria of Cotton made in Africa. It ensures higher yields, fair income for farmers, advancement of women and improvement of school infrastructure apart from improving the competitiveness of organic cotton originating from Africa. The organic cotton will be sourced from the AbTF verified Tanzanian company BioSustain. Established in 2006 with an aim to revive organic cotton farming in Tanzania; BioSustain supports over 9000 farmers with technical and financial assistance.
