A recent letter, led by United States House of Representatives members Ilhan Omar, Jim McGovern, and Jan Schakowsky, and co-signed by representatives Raul Grijalva, Barbara Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, David Trone, and Susan Wild—all members of the Democratic Party—calls upon the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) to advocate for fairer wages and protect the rights of Bangladeshi garment workers.
In a press release, Representative Ilhan Omar emphasised the urgency of supporting the demands of Bangladesh’s garment workers for equitable wages.
The letter highlights concerns about recent wage increases in Bangladesh that fall short of addressing the rising cost of living, triggering widespread protests.
The press release expressed solidarity with the Biden administration’s call for the Bangladeshi Government to respect workers’ rights to organise, protest peacefully, and engage in collective bargaining without fear of retaliation.
