The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has reported that 15 garment workers from various factories in the 7 NG Special Economic Zone in Kandal Province, Cambodia were injured in a traffic accident.
Two of the workers were seriously injured when the truck they were riding on rear-ended a bus in Ksach Kandal District, reportedly causing the workers’ heads to hit the overhead bars they hang onto for support. All the injured workers were assisted and sent immediately to the nearby hospital. The NSSF was responsible for paying for the workers’ transport and treatment, the report added.

It may be mentioned here that 25 garment workers got injured recently in an accident in Kampong Speu Province due to alleged driver carelessness last month. Furthermore, last year, garment workers were involved in 5,609 traffic accidents that resulted in 103 deaths and 7,446 injuries, 970 of which were serious.
The Cambodian Government has announced that it was considering constructing a railway line connecting Phnom Penh and select provinces to special economic zones or industrial areas in response to the high number of road accidents involving commuting workers.
