Officials of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), who are currently visiting Bangladesh, interacted with the labour leaders from different economic sectors with the aim to know the existing labour situation in Bangladesh, across six major areas.
This is as per media reports, which underlined the USTR officials and the local union leaders discussed issues related to the six major areas, namely trade union registration, workers’ wages and uniform labour laws for both inside and outside of Export Processing Zones (EPZs), unfair labour practices, freedom of association and the collective bargaining agent.
Reports further added President of the Bangladesh Apparels Workers Federation Md Towhidur Rahman was present at the meeting organised by the Solidarity Centre at its Dhaka office and attended by five to six union leaders from different parts of Bangladesh.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Towhidur reportedly maintained the USTR team mainly wanted to know whether the roadmap of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) was being followed in labour issues.
