UNIREC, a sustainable clothing brand based in India, which creates clothing made from recycled PET bottles, served as the sustainability partner at IIT Bombay’s Mood Indigo cultural fest.
UNIREC had a unique dumpster stand in the form of a T-shirt to collect plastic bottles throughout the event. This enabled the brand to bring awareness about environmental-friendly practices and drew the attention of other institutes towards the sustainable clothing brand apart from managing to garner attention from over 1,00,000 students.
India produces 16.5 billion metric tonnes of plastic per year which is over 250,000 tonnes per day. Every Indian consumes almost 11 kilograms of plastic annually on an average.
PET bottles can be recycled and used to create polyester fabric which when paired with cotton or other fabrics, can aid in lowering carbon emissions and footprints.
UNIREC is a company that uses PET bottles in the manufacturing of various apparel items including formal jackets, sleeveless jackets, trousers, and shirts along with T-shirts. Each item of UNIREC clothing contributes to the recycling of 10 1-liter plastic bottles on average.
UNIREC is working to turn the problems of plastic waste into an opportunity, all under the leadership of Kapil Bhatia, who is a renowned figure in the apparel industry and is himself the director of a reputable menswear brand.
UNIREC is also looking to find ways to repurpose clothing in various ways, which serves to increase the life cycle of the fabric while decreasing its environmental impact.
