Welcoming the move by the garment makers’ bodies, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to jointly frame a unified code of conduct for the Bangladesh readymade garment industry, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) — TIB is the Bangladesh branch of the Berlin-based civil society Transparency International — has called for engaging all the stakeholders in the exercise.
Media reports maintained this citing a press note issued in this direction, which suggested engaging all stakeholders including researchers and social organisations and apparel workers and labour bodies, in the process.
Meanwhile, TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman, reportedly, said if an integrated code of conduct can be framed and implemented with the participation of all stakeholders, it will play a significant role in ensuring a decent work environment in the apparel industry even as he added Bangladesh RMG sector has largely been able to overcome the image crisis created following the Rana Plaza tragedy by ensuring safe work environment through joint ventures of foreign and local bodies while also underlining it still needs to go far to accomplish the desired progress.
