In Mumbai, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier investigation agency has registered a case of corruption against officials for clearing fraudulent claims for subsidies to the tune of Rs. 6.5 crore.
As per reports a director, three assistant directors, two technical officials of the office of the Textile Commissioner, Navi Mumbai, and five others have been booked.
The Union Ministry of Textiles introduced a subsidy scheme wherein powerlooms were provided with financial assistance for in-situ upgradation. The office of the Textile Commissioner in Navi Mumbai was tasked with examining the details of powerlooms that fall in its jurisdiction before disbursing the fund under the scheme.
The reports claim that subsequently, the Bhiwandi powerloom cluster saw an increase in approved subsidy cases in 2016-17. After it came to notice, an internal inquiry was conducted which found that in 719 of the 3,110 approved cases, the non-judicial stamp paper of Rs. 100 bore the same serial numbers.
It was alleged the officials did not check the eligibility of powerlooms and or verify the relevant documents.
