In a move to protect the Yamuna River, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has instructed all the textile units to turn into a ‘zero discharge unit’ by treating and recycling discharged water. The textile units in Gurgaon, nearly 40 in number, spread across Manesar and Udyog Vihar, discharge more than 25 kL water per day. These units have been asked to install an ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) each and also an RO (reverse osmosis) plant to re-use the discharged water before December 2016. Installation of an ETP plant takes 4 to 6 months and costs somewhere around INR 4 to 5 crores, which may not be commercially viable for all the factories.
