USA-based climate positive smart textiles company, Tandem Repeat Technologies, uses Squitex Technology to develop a squid protein-based plastic alternative with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Squitex technology is looking to revolutionise the fashion industry with a sustainable replacement for petroleum and animal-based fibres.
The latest development aims to defy current practices of the textile industry by focusing on unparalleled strength, durability, and sustainability.
The use of squid proteins replaces polluting, harmful plastic from choosing oceans as a dumping stage. The company believes this technology to be a game changer in the textile world.
Melik Demirel, Co-Founder of Tandem Repeat stated, “Plastic breaks down into the microfibres found in everything, but Squitex can reduce microfibre pollution by harnessing nature’s genetic code. Our team combines bio manufacturing and artificial intelligence to fine-tune the physical properties of Squitex for various tasks, including predicting protein sequences and structures as well as designing apparel.”
The company has been awarded and funded multiple times from known organisations including, BioMed, and has also won the Microfibre Innovation Challenge to develop sustainable fibres.
