Sonar Madina Spinning Mills Limited, one of Bangladesh’s biggest manufacturers of 100% export-oriented yarn, is spearheading the revolution in the spinning sector in a major step towards increased sustainability and energy efficiency.

The spinning industry is essential to Bangladesh’s economy, with about 500 mills in operation nationwide. Bangladeshi mills must, however, maintain low manufacturing costs because the sector is highly competitive with foreign firms in China, India, and Taiwan. Energy costs account for a large amount of these charges, especially for high-output mills. Electrical gear and equipment may sustain expensive damage as a result of power supply interruptions such voltage sags.

Sonar Madina has switched to high-efficiency Jenbacher petrol engines, specifically two JMS 420 units with a combined capacity of 3MWe, in collaboration with Clarke Energy. When compared to coal-based energy sources, the mill is able to achieve significant emissions savings thanks to the replacement of older gas gensets with these gas engines. “By working closely with our reliable partner Clarke Energy, we have greatly minimised our carbon footprint, contributing to environmental sustainability,” said Ahmed Rafi, Director of Sonar Madina Spinning Mills, underscoring the significance of this partnership.
The mill may use waste heat from exhaust flue gases for industrial processes like drying and steam production thanks to the installation’s waste heat recovery feature. This improves total energy efficiency and may result in additional spinning mill operating cost savings. Jenbacher gas engine-powered captive power plants are essential for guaranteeing a dependable, economical and ecologically sustainable energy generation solution.
The industry as a whole stands to gain from lower operating costs and a lessened environmental effect as more spinning mills seek to update their operations with energy-efficient technology, eventually promoting the long-term expansion of Bangladesh’s RMG sector.
