Underlining the importance of unity between the two most important stakeholders of the readymade garment industry of Bangladesh namely the workers and factory owners, the President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Dr. Rubana Huq called upon both to strengthen the mutual relationship while urging the labour leaders to refrain from complaining to foreigners on the internal issues of the industry.
She said this at a roundtable discussion on the national budget at the National Press Club in capital Dhaka on Tuesday.
“The BGMEA will take all necessary initiatives if workers inform the organisation of their demands before lodging complaints with foreigners,” maintained Rubana, adding, “The welfare of the workers reflects the industry’s well-being. Do not cause any violence. I am with you.”
As per Rubana, the so-called lack of unity between factory owners and worker leaders was a barrier to the industry’s development.
“Foreign buyers do not increase rates even though our production cost has increased immensely. If you complain to buyers, then they get a chance to bargain and reduce prices,” explained Rubana.
