
As workers protested on Monday to voice several demands, more than 80 factories in the Ashulia-Gazipur industrial belt stayed closed.
Dhaka Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) members hold about 69 of the impacted factories, according per the trade association’s data.
At about six o’clock on Monday night, workers at Euphoria Apparels in Savar’s Jamgora neighbourhood vandalised the facility. Additionally, they vandalised a Bangladesh Army vehicle and set fire to a Rapid Action Battalion vehicle. Following their detention, one individual was turned over to the Ashulia Police Station.
“Production is normal in most factories in the industrial area,” Md Sarwar Alam, superintendent of Ashulia Industrial Police-1, told the local media.
“However, workers in some factories were dissatisfied as several of their demands were unmet and they did not return to work. So, the authorities of those factories declared a general holiday.”
Over the last two weeks, disturbances, vandalism, and arson assaults have targeted Bangladesh’s industrial hubs, primarily the Ashulia-Gazipur area, amid worker demands for arrears to be cleared and enhanced allowances and perks.
Creating a friendly work atmosphere, extending maternity leave from three to six months, and hiring an equal number of men and women are a few of the demands.
Customers’ fears are a result of the unrest’s impact on export-oriented goods production.
Workers may disagree on whether to report back to work after some of their requests have been partially granted.
