Primark, the Ireland-based fashion retailer, has finally published the list of suppliers it sources its apparels from.
The list contained the names and addresses of 1,071 factories across 31 countries in addition to having details of number of employees working in each factory.
Notably, Primark sources from 23 factories in Vietnam, which is one of the biggest garment manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia. It is also worth mentioning here that the retail giant sources from 173 factories in India and 89 factories in Bangladesh, including some major exporters.
Primark’s decision comes immediately in the wake of a recent petition signed by nearly 70,000 consumers wherein the fast fashion brands like Armani, Walmart, Forever 21 and others were asked to share the list of suppliers on public domain.
Paul Lister, heading the Ethical Trade Team at Primark, reportedly said that the company had initially shied away from disclosing the supplier’s information due to competition. However, the recent trend of seeking transparency has influenced the retail giant in taking this decision.
It is worth noting that a factory is detailed on the Primark’s Global Sourcing Map only after it has produced products for Primark for a year and has become an established supplier.
Each factory entry includes the site address, the number of workers and gender split, which is reviewed by Primark twice a year.
“This is good news and Primark should be applauded for publishing this list. Embracing this transparency agenda not only requires commitment but also significant time and effort,” said Peter McAllister, Executive Director, ETI.
