The United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, has come up with a tool that could help businesses track their progress towards achieving the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs).
With 10 years left to meet the deadline of attaining SDG goals in 2030, the programme has been created in collaboration with non-profit organisation B Lab, which operates the B Corporation certification initiative.
Available in 5 different languages, the free-to-access tool will help users identify which SDGs matter most to individual businesses based on their company profile.
Moreover, a dashboard will give a visual of the progress made and help to track performance.
Lise Kingo, CEO and Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, said “Despite real progress made by the business community, there is clear recognition that action is not measuring up to the size of the challenge. The business community has an important role to play delivering on the promise of a shared, durable prosperity for all.”
The tool has been worked on the basis of the feedback from a range of stakeholders, including experts in sustainability, civil society, the UN and academia.
The programme also has helping hands from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Generation Foundation, Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC), Emmanuel Faber as an individual donor, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Skoll Foundation.
The United Nations Global Compact works with companies to align their operations and strategies with ten universal principles in the area of human rights, labour environment and anti-corruption.
