SGS, a leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, has introduced the SGS Independently Checked Mark (IC Mark) for reusable fabric masks across North America.
The newly launched IC Mark tests and verifies fabric masks by utilising key performance attributes from the industry consensus standard – ASTM F3502 Standard Specification for Barrier Face Coverings.
The approved IC Mark can test for breathability, particle filtration efficiency, labelling, strap attachment strength, service life claims, restricted substances and flammability.
The consumers across North America will now be able to have an assurance that the masks they are wearing are passed through safety and performance claims and meet regulatory standards, according to SGS.
Matthew McGarrity, Senior PPE Technical Manager, SGS North America, commented, “Consumers need reassurance from manufacturers and retailers that the reusable fabric masks they are using are performing as intended. They also need to know important criteria such as how many laundering cycles their masks can go through until they are no longer of use.”
It’s worth mentioning here that SGS North America along with other industry specialists helped draft the ASTM F3502 Standard Specification for Barrier Face Coverings which includes criteria such as minimum design, performance and care/use instructions.
