Yorkshire-based waste management firm MYGROUP plans on building a sustainable textile factory at its existing Hull site investing £ 500,000 described by the company as a first in the UK.
The factory will remanufacture products end-to-end into new products as a textile recycling innovative centre reducing clothing pollution and its environmental impact by creating circularity in the fashion industry through its sustainable approach. The initiative will also create economic sustainibility by creating employment for the local population and at the same time substantially contributing to the economic growth of the region.
The two-storey 1300 square metre factory houses a complete recycling and remanufacturing process for waste textiles, from clothing to accessories and home furnishings. The recycling process involves a commercial-grade cleaning cycle and deconstruction process to remove hardware like buttons, zippers and multi-materials. The broken-down bare constituent material is then transformed into new garments, accessories or other products by the team in their pattern-cutting and design studio and in their industrial-grade machine production floor.
According to Steve Carrie, Director, MYGROUP, “We are proud to launch this pioneering venture that showcases the company and the city of Hull’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. We’re ahead of the curve and building a factory of the future – our end-to-end recycling process combined with remanufacturing capabilities will revolutionize the way our industry thinks about textile waste”.
The end-to-end recycling process by the factory aims to reduce a substantial portion of textile waste from landfill and incineration reducing the demand for virgin resources and mitigating the environmental impact of textile production. The first phase of the factory will be complete by this autumn and further investments of 400k pounds are planned for the spring of 2024.
