In response to recent incidents of road blockades and protests by workers from various garment factories in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila, demanding a minimum basic salary of Taka 23,000, the Minimum Wages Board (MWB), tasked with establishing minimum wages for Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) workers, has called upon workers’ leaders to avoid spreading confusion about the finalisation of minimum wages.
Liaquat Ali Mollah, Chairman of the Minimum Wages Board, reportedly issued this request in a statement issued recently, even as he clarified that the fourth meeting to recommend minimum wages for RMG workers and employees took place on 22nd October in the MWB’s meeting room.
The meeting, chaired by the board’s chairman, was attended by various members, including an independent member, representatives of ownership, and worker representatives.
During the meeting, both the ownership and worker representatives presented separate written wage proposals. While the board extensively discussed these proposals, no decision was reached regarding the new minimum wage for RMG workers.
Mollah emphasised that discussions on setting the minimum wage are still ongoing, and no final decision has been made thus far.
Mollah further urged that no confusion should be created and asked everyone to refrain from disseminating misleading information among the workers on this matter.
