The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has extended its support to the Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus, a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting “climate-smart policies” to reduce waste, repair textiles, rewear garments, and encourage recycling.
Founded by Congresswomen Chellie Pingree (Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington), and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (California), the caucus is the first of its kind in the US, dedicated to addressing waste and pollution caused by the fast fashion industry. It has already garnered support from leading sustainable fashion advocates such as Patagonia, ThredUp, Remake, and The RealReal.
LHCA, representing 75 companies in the US leather supply chain, highlighted leather’s significant role in sustainable fashion as a natural, durable, and repairable material that aligns with slow fashion principles.
Mike York, co-chair of LHCA, emphasised the alignment of the council’s goals with those of the caucus, advocating for mindful shopping, prolonged product use, and recycling. Kerry Brozyna, LHCA president, added that leather supports sustainability by offering long-lasting, repairable products that reduce waste and support environmental preservation.
