
With the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr inching closer (likely to be celebrated on 22nd April), law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh are apprehensive around 145 apparel manufacturing units across the country might labour unrest over the non-payment of wages and festival allowances.
This is as per reports, which added the intelligence agency has recently submitted the list of the factories, in which unrest might take place, to the Labour and the Home Ministries even if according to industry people, the garment makers’ body of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) are closely monitoring these units.
Reports further added most of the apparel units where labour unrest is apprehended are members of the BKMEA and BGMEA even if some are subcontracting units.
The factories that have been identified by the agencies where there are chances of labour unrest are reportedly located in Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Dhaka metropolitan area, Dhaka district, Gazipur and Chittagong.
