Inditex, the parent company of global apparel brands like ZARA, has signed an agreement with Lenzing, an Austrian fibre supplier, for the development of new textile raw materials from fabric waste.
As per the agreement, Inditex will provide Lenzing with roughly 500 tonnes of textile waste, with the aim of raising it to around 3,000 tonnes within a few years. The company announced this at its recently held Annual General Meeting (AGM) while unveiling their ‘Environment Strategy Plan’ to initiate a garment collection system and further establish its circular economy model in all phases of the product cycle.

The Group is also reportedly expected to collaborate with Cáritas. As part of the association, Inditex will install 1,500 to 2,000 garment collection containers in Spain. The Spanish Charity will sort collected clothing to further the garment’s life via its distribution channels or allow for recycling for the creation of fresh textile raw materials. Inditex will donate Euros 3.5 million for the project over the course of two years.
Another fashion giant, Sweden-based H&M is also moving towards a 100 per cent circular business model. Collecting more than 12,000 tonnes of unwanted garments at its stores in 2015 alone, the retailer made more than one million products using at least 20 per cent recycled material from the collected garments.
