Even if there is huge potential for Bangladesh to boost its apparel export in future, employment generation in this sector would shrink thanks to growing use of automation in the era of fourth industrial revolution (4IR).
As per reports, this was underlined by the experts recently while participating in a virtual discussion.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID) — the Research and Policy Integration for Development is a private, non-profit and non-partisan research organisation based in Bangladesh — Dr. Abdur Razzaque, reportedly, said that China and Vietnam use only 48 workers and India and Cambodia use 75 workers to make readymade garments of US $ 1 million, while in case of Bangladesh, it is 140 workers, and went on to add that use of advanced technology and automation would rise significantly in Bangladesh soon.
… that means our apparel export will be increased by 30-40 billion in future, but the sector may not generate new employments, reportedly, maintained Dr. Abdur Razzaque even as Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Convenor of Citizen’s Platform, who presided over the dialogue, reportedly, stated that Bangladesh garment industry is going through changes centring 3Ps, namely product, production and productivity while underlining that handling of the 3Ps would be a big matter for the country (Bangladesh) in future.
