European Union delegation, visiting Bangladesh, has expressed concerns over delay in amending Export Processing Zone (EPZ) law even as it added the existing law does not allow freedom of association.
Media reports maintained this adding the EU delegation underlined the same during its recent meeting with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) even as it, reportedly, added that Bangladesh Labour Act allows freedom of association while the EPZ law allows it under a Workers Participation Committee instead of trade union.
The EU as such, reportedly, maintained there should be a uniform law for all workers in Bangladesh even if an amendment to the EPZ labour law is an eligibility criterion for the EU to continue Everything But Arms (EBA) scheme for Bangladesh.
The EU delegation is scheduled to hold meetings with Senior Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh as well.
