Better Cotton, a cotton sustainability initiative, has signed the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Sustainability Pledge ahead of the introduction of their traceability solution later this year.
The UNECE Sustainability Pledge is a set of open-source policy proposals, rules, and standards that allow industry actors to validate their sustainability claims. Its ultimate goal is to create a Community of Practice where stakeholders can work together to develop traceability and transparency as enablers of sustainability and circularity.
Alia Malik, senior director of data and traceability at Better Cotton said, “We are signing UNECE’s Sustainability Pledge not only to affirm our commitment to improving traceability and transparency in Better Cotton supply chains but also in support of traceability and the use of more credible sustainability claims across the industry.”
Better Cotton joins more than 90 other companies as a member of the UNECE Sustainability Pledge, including renowned fashion brands Inditex and Vivienne Westwood, the NGO WWF, digital supply chain platform Retraced, and cloud-based supply chain mapping platform FibreTrace.
The development of Better Cotton’s traceability solution, which is believed to be a key component of its 2030 plan, is the focus of the company’s submission to the commitment. With over 2,500 organisations as members, it considers itself to be in a good position to develop a scalable solution that can be used all over the world. Retailers and brand members will be able to confirm the Physical Better Cotton’s country of origin thanks to the traceability solution.
