
Underlining the apparel industry of Bangladesh has made significant progress in the areas of sustainability, especially workers’ wellbeing and industrial relations, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan maintained that since the tragic building collapse of 2013, a paradigm shift had taken place in the areas of fire, structural and electrical safety at workplace, supported by the global brands and donors like ILO, in addition to the lead role played by the Bangladesh Government, thanks to which, the apparel industry has earned global recognition for the strides it has taken in terms of sustainability and safety.
According to reports, Faruque made these observations while addressing a seminar on inclusive business titled, ‘Seminar on Wellbeing of RMG Workers through Inclusive Business Initiative’, and organised by the Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DBCCI), recently, even as he went on to add the industry has responded well on all the issues of compliance and workers’ rights, starting from the elimination of child labour in mid-nineties, and the emerging compliances issues including ensuring the minimum wage, timely payment of wages, overtime, hygiene, etc.
Director General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Faiyaz Murshid Kazi attended the programme as guest of honour, while the BGMEA President was the Chief Guest.
