Demonstrating the garment sector’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, a Bangladeshi knitwear manufacturer recently surpassed a local counterpart to achieve the highest rating from an international green building certification agency.
SM Sourcing, situated in Gazipur, secured an outstanding score of 106 out of 110, the highest globally, and was officially certified.
The company’s brochure highlights their achievements in energy savings (30 per cent), drinking water savings (60 per cent), increased daylight utilization (75 per cent), and sourcing 15 per cent of energy from renewable sources.
This remarkable feat surpasses the previous record held by Green Textile Limited Unit 4, a collaborative effort of Epic Group and Envoy Legacy in Bangladesh, which scored 104 out of 110 earlier this year.
Certifications are granted under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system by the non-profit United States Green Building Council.
The system includes platinum as the highest category, followed by gold and silver, with a fourth category acknowledging industrial units meeting minimum requirements.
