This week, the Bangladeshi Government will hold high-level talks with Steffen Bohni, the director of the Danish National Research Centre for Working Environment, on the creation of a research plan for the almost finished NOSHTRI in Rajshahi.
To define the research plan for the National Occupational Safety and Health Training and Research Institute (NOSHTRI), the Governments of Bangladesh and Denmark are holding a strategy workshop in Dhaka on 22nd-23rd May. On 25th May, there will be follow-up discussions in Rajshahi.
The goal of NOSHTRI is to establish itself as a pillar for encouraging a preventative safety culture in Bangladeshi workplaces.
There is an untapped potential for research and data to inform policy-making on occupational safety and health, enforcement, and good practices in workplaces.
The institute, situated in Rajshahi, is a significant investment by the Government of Bangladesh of approximately Taka 1.6 billion.
It aims to deliver research on workplace health and safety and training for workers and employers.
A variety of occupational safety and health topics, including boiler safety and ergonomics, are covered in the learning materials that have been developed. The ILO, Denmark, and GIZ have all contributed significantly to the training initiatives.
Participants in this workshop will include representatives from academics, the Department for Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE), international partners, and civil society.
Key topics of discussion will include the significance of forming local and worldwide relationships and the use of research to enhance workplace health and safety.
Millions of Bangladeshi workers stand to gain greatly from data-driven research that will influence policy and industrial decision-making through the research method implemented at NOSHTRI.
