
On the fateful day of 24th November 2012, a major fire broke out at the Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia district on the outskirts of Dhaka, claiming 117 lives besides injuring more than 200 people. The incident is considered the deadliest factory fire in the nation’s history till date.
Several organisations representing workers employed in the country’s readymade garment sector, observed the sixth anniversary of the tragic incident by laying wreaths at the graves of the victims, on Saturday.
Leaders and activists of 20 organizations including Garments Sramik Federation, Samajtantrik Sramik Federation, Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik Federation, Jago Bangladesh Federation, Bangladesh Poshak Sromik Trade Union Federation, and Shwadin Bangla Garment Sramik Federation, laid flower wreaths at the graveyard.
As per labour leaders, more than two thousand workers were in the factory on that fateful day, of which at least 113 perished while scores of others got injure. Family members of both the dead and injured workers were yet to get any compensation, they claimed.
As per media reports, Organizing Secretary of Garments Sramik Federation Soumitra Kumar Das reportedly claimed that more than 200 workers who were injured in that incident continue to live in dire straits still.
“Due to the nature of their injuries and the mental trauma, the Tazreen victims suffer a lot and many workers are finding it hard to secure a job,” reportedly maintained Bangladesh Textile and Garments Workers League, Savar unit President Sarwar Hossain adding, “I hope the Government will take immediate steps to help the victims.”
Meanwhile, President of Poshak Sromik Trade Union Federation Tuhin Chowdhury, and President of Shwadin Bangla Garment Sramik Federation (Savar unit) AL Kamran reportedly called upon the Government to rehabilitate the victims injured in the incident.
