Indian textile and garment major Grasim Industries, the flagship of Aditya Birla Group, has received environmental clearance from the Union Environment Ministry to its proposal on the expansion of Vilayat Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) unit in Baruch, Gujarat.
In a letter issued to Grasim Industries, the Union Environment Ministry has said it has given the clearance to the company’s project on the expansion of Vilayat unit subject to compliance with certain conditions. The increase in VSF production capacity will fulfil the stipulated demand of manmade fibres in the country.
The company has decided to invest Rs. 2,560 crores to increase the production of manmade fibres under its Grasim Cellulosic Division. The expansion of the production capacity from current 1,27,750 tonnes per annum (TPA) to 2,55,500 TPA will create around 2,500 jobs.
The Grasim Cellulosic Division ranks among India’s largest private sector companies. Its Vilayat plant is spread over 222.63 hectares area.
The Grasim Industries currently operates four Viscose Staple Fibre plants in the country and Gujarat is a home to two of them; others are in Kharach and Vilayat in Bharuch district.
The company reportedly also plans to establish a unit of Solvent Spun Cellulosic Fibre with a capacity of 36,500 TPA.
Grasim Industries Limited started as a textiles manufacturer in India in 1947. Today, it is a leading global player in VSF.
