
Two Indian ministers have discussed measures to boost jute production in the country… Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani and her counterpart in the Agriculture Ministry, Radha Mohan Singh have decided to sensitise jute farmers about certified seeds for cultivation.
The ministers have also discussed ways to scale up implementation of ‘Jute i-Care’, a programme aimed at handholding the farmers to increase the supply of raw jute. The project is being implemented by NJB in association with Jute Corporation of India Ltd. (JCI) and Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibres, (CRIJAF), and Ministry of Agriculture.
“Urged @AgriGoI officials to include Jute under Seed Village Programme & guide Jute farmers on second crop to increase income & productivity,” Irani tweeted.
The two ministers also discussed the promotion of agro textiles that can benefit industry as well as farmers since they are cost-effective and recyclable and the strategy for the coming financial year 2017-18.

They have also decided to provide new machinery for jute production to farmers through Krishi Vikas Kendras. A pilot project Jute-ICARE (Jute Improved Cultivation and Advanced Retting Exercise) was launched in January, 2015, in selected Blocks of West Bengal and Assam where jute cultivation is popular to improve income of farmers through both increase in yield and improvement in quality of fibres.
