Bangladesh will get its first of its kind polyester staple fibre plant which will be built by the Deshbandhu Group, a corporate house in Bangladesh, in association with Chemtex Inc., a US-based technology and engineering solution provider for polyester. A contract regarding the same was signed in a ceremony held in Dhaka in the presence of Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu.
Polyester staple fibre is produced from synthetic chemical compounds, and is strong enough to be twisted into yarn similar to natural fibres such as cotton or wool. The factory is to start production in 24 months and will produce 400 tonnes of fibre a day. The main target would be the soaring garment industry of Bangladesh itself as the country imports polyester staple fibre worth US $ 480 million per year. The plant is expected to employ 2,000 workers directly and 6,000 indirectly.
