Birla Cellulose, a global leader in viscose staple fibre, is set to unveil Dyed Modal, an innovative premium fibre, next month. Dr. Ravinder Tuteja, Head of Product Development and Marketing, Birla Cellulose said that modal fibre is injected with a pigment to create Dyed Modal, reports a leading news site.
A lot of cotton melange yarn is manufactured out of which 65-90 per cent of the fibre is undyed and the remaining 35-10 per cent is dyed, with the fibres mixed at the spinning stage to produce a frosty looking yarn. Benefits of Dyed Modal include its colour fastness properties, clarity and superior pilling rating. With all the pilot trials done, R&D is almost complete. A great demand for this product is there based on value chain feedback in the market. Initially offering in black, Birla Cellulose will expand the range to include a variety of colours, based on seasonal trends and consumer research.
“Dyed Modal can eliminate the expensive and cumbersome process of dyeing of cotton fibre. Melange having good demand in India and Europe can be created by directly blending the Dyed Modal with cotton,” avers Tuteja.

A functional fibre with anti-bacterial properties for textile applications is also in early stages of development, which will have the ability to kill 99.99 per cent of bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae – odour causing bacteria present in our sweat, reveals Tuteja, adding, “The fibre has been tested during pilot production and it meets the requirements for the AATCC 100 and JIS L 1902 standards. Fibre applications can range from sportswear to officewear.”
