
The world’s largest physical retailer Walmart Inc. has launched the company’s second B2B fulfilment centre in Uttar Pradesh and announced that it is eyeing expansion in the Indian market and will open another six stores in the region in coming time.
Notably, the US-based retailer currently has four stores in the state; 2 in Agra and one in Lucknow and another one in Meerut.
Krish Iyer, CEO, Walmart, India said on the development that Uttar Pradesh has always been important and top priority state for the American retailer. “We are boosting our operations in the state to support kiranas, small farmers and local suppliers to help make them successful,” he said.
Furthermore, the CEO affirmed media that another such centre will soon be launched in Hyderabad. These centres contribute to enhancing the economy of a state by providing jobs and providing a boost to the SME sectors.
Additionally, the leading global retailer is also planning to increase its exclusive cash-and-carry stores, that run under the name of Best Price in the nation. “We are going to introduce two outlets this year and will increase the number to eight by next year and have planned to launch 10 stores per year afterwards,” said the Walmart India CEO.
Walmart at present operates 21 such Best Price stores across nine states in the country. Elucidating on the expansion plans, Iyer was quoted as saying by the media that Walmart has inked a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the State Government to set up 15 stores in the coming five years.
Apart from the brick-and-mortar expansion, Walmart is awaiting a clearance from India’s trader’s body for the acquisition it made back in May this year, which gives the retailer a 77 per cent stake in India’s biggest e-commerce player Flipkart.
