Though 2021 has begun well for Boohoo, with the retailer buying Debenhams and some Arcadia brands, horrors of 2020 seem to have come back to haunt the retailer.
US authorities have now decided to probe claims of forced labour and poor working practices in Boohoo’s supply chain across the UK.
Anything that goes against the British online retailer could lead to its items confiscated at ports.
Earlier last month, a charity organisation, Liberty Shared, sent a petition to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) body highlighting concerns with Leicester-based factories that work for Boohoo.
The CPB is looking at the concerns and if any evidence points towards forced labour, then it could lead to confiscation of products at ports.
It didn’t end here! Another petition was sent last month (7 February), which, reportedly, brought out potential concerns in apparel factories based in the district of Leicester East. Notably, Boohoo buys over 60 per cent of goods made in these apparel units.
Boohoo has been, however, putting efforts as only last month it instructed its suppliers in Leicester to not do sub-contracting. You can find more details on the same at Do not subcontract, Boohoo tells its suppliers.
Meanwhile, online retailer Boohoo has denied of having any infor mation about investigation by US authorities. It has expressed confidence that the actions it is taking are good enough to meet all CBP criteria.
