India has extended its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Paris’ renowned Galeries Lafayette luxury department store, known for housing an extensive collection of luxury fashion brands, following its successful debut at the Eiffel Tower in February.
UPI went live at Galeries Lafayette’s flagship store in Haussmann, Paris. The Indian Embassy in France announced this milestone, highlighting it as a step towards broader UPI acceptance in the city. The launch event featured India’s Ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf, and Galeries Lafayette’s CEO, Nicolas Houze.
“We are delighted to be the first department store in Europe to offer the UPI payment solution at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann,” said Galeries Lafayette Paris Hausmann’s director Vincent Sénéquat in a press release.
“With the opening of our first Indian store in Mumbai in 2025, followed by New Delhi, this initiative becomes even more significant, symbolising our commitment to reinforcing the ties between our two countries,” said Sénéquat.
UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), integrates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application, streamlining transactions for users globally.
