Fast Retailing owned Gu has established a strong online presence, an app, and a flagship store in New York City as part of its initial foray into the US market.
In order to promote its products to new consumers and so “greatly fuel [the company’s] expectations for business growth in the US,” the Uniqlo sibling brand first tested the waters in the US in the autumn of 2022 by opening a pop-up store, according to CEO Osamu Yunoki.
“We’ve leveraged the insights gained to create a robust framework for global business operations and product development,” he said in his statement. “We are excited to announce the debut of our US e-commerce site and the grand opening of our official US store. We’re excited to introduce Gu fashion to even more people.”
The first Gu store outside of Asia to open permanently is the physical retail site. Gu NY Soho, which is located at 578 Broadway, is 10,225 square feet in size and has two floors filled with men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, and footwear.
Gu also revealed a new partnership with the fashion brand Undercover as part of the US launch, with a line dubbed “Kosmik/noise” that includes 22 different designs. All-gender pieces like track coats, stadium jumpers and logo tops are among the looks. Special edition collaborative pieces like clothes that reference movies like ‘The Wizard of Oz’ are also featured.
