A few weeks ago, the closure of Ted Baker’s UK stores was just a possibility, but now it appears certain, with reports indicating that all remaining shops will permanently close by midweek.
It has also been suggested that the anticipated retail licensing deal with Frasers Group is unlikely to proceed, despite earlier expectations that it was a near certainty.
The administrators at Teneo, who have been managing the business following the collapse of Ted Baker’s former operator, No Ordinary Designer Label, earlier this year, will oversee the closure of the last 31 stores. According to the report, Tuesday will mark the final day of trading.
The reasons behind the collapse of the Frasers deal remain unclear. Ted Baker’s brand owner, Authentic Brands Group, confirmed that there are no ongoing discussions with Frasers but did not provide further details on why the talks fell through. Frasers has also declined to comment.
The future of Ted Baker on the high street is uncertain. While Next had shown early interest and there were potential opportunities from the US, it’s unclear if the brand will make a comeback with a new licensing partner.
For now, around 500 jobs are at risk, adding to the 245 jobs lost earlier this year when 15 stores were closed.
