Shopify, a Canadian e-commerce services firm, exceeded analysts’ fourth-quarter sales and profit projections on Tuesday, thanks to robust merchant demand during the crucial holiday shopping season.
Shopify forecasts its free cash flow margin for the first quarter, which is generally its lowest sales quarter, to be in the mid-single-digit percentage range. That compares to 21 per cent in the fourth quarter.
William Blair analyst Matthew Pfau said, “Investors were most likely not expecting such a significant decrease in FCF margin from the fourth to the first quarter”.
The business expects operating expenses to increase by a “low-teens percentage rate” in the current quarter compared to the previous quarter, owing mostly to marketing and employee-related costs.
According to the corporation, merchants on the platform sold a record US $ 9.3 billion during the Black Friday-Cyber Monday weekend, a 24 per cent rise from the previous year.
In the face of increasing competition, the firm has been incorporating AI-enabled features into a variety of products using Shopify Magic and its AI-enabled assistant “Sidekick”. Meanwhile, the firm anticipates the effect of a new pricing plan for Shopify Plus, its enterprise-focused solution, in the second half of 2024.
