Sainsbury’s Tu clothing witnessed a fall of 10.1 per cent in sales for the 16 weeks that ended 25 June 2022.
The London-based retailer, however, saw the apparel sales go up by 3.9 per cent when compared to the same period in 2019-2020.
Category-wise, womenswear, swimwear and holidaywear did exceptionally well – thanks to increase in travel.
The retailer said that both apparel and general merchandise sales were according to its expectations. Reportedly, there was improved sales trend following the first 5-week period when non-essential retail was closed last year.
It is worth stating that Sainsbury’s total retail sales (excluding fuel) slumped by 4.5 per cent year-on-year in the said period, but rose by 5.4 per cent when compared to 2019-2020.
Sainsbury’s was founded in 1869 and is known for apparels, homewares, groceries and electricals, amongst others.
