Sabyasachi couture, which is owned by the Indian conglomerate, Aditya Birla Group, has recently appointed Manish Chopra as its CEO (chief executive officer).
Chopra, who was previously a senior leader at the SHEIN India (operating under Reliance Retail Ventures), has joined at a strategic time, when the domestic apparel market is not only witnessing a revival after a slump in 2024 but the designers like Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra are also expanding into the global market.
Apart from SHEIN India, Chopra has worked in retail, consumer markets, and technology sector. He started his career at Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals and PwC, and also had experience of working at Microsoft and Oracle. He is also the founder of e-commerce company Zovi.com, co-founder at Little Internet, and has also led partnerships for Meta.
At SHEIN India, he led operations, however, the app is still in its early stages in India despite the two-year partnership with Reliance Retail. Adding to that, the two companies are in talks over their global sourcing partnership as amid tariffs, Beijing has discouraged the Chinese companies from carrying production overseas.
However, post his experience at SHEIN India, Chopra’s appointment is seen as an effort to scale and level up Sabyasachi’s operations – the luxury Indian fashion label which sold a 51% stake to the ABFRL (Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited) in 2021.
