Ross, which operates under the renowned brand name ‘Ross Dress for Less’, announced yesterday that all its stores will continue to remain closed.
Earlier the retailer had planned to reopen the outlets on 4 April, but with COVID-19 spreading at a faster pace, the stores may not open anytime soon.
Add to it, it has been now reported in the media that Ross will furlough most of its store workers and distribution centre employees to combat the crisis.
Starting 5 April 2020, the furlough will continue until operations can resume. The retailer was quick to add that all the employees who will be furloughed will continue to remain Ross associates and will be able to avail all health benefits. Ross will, however, pick the employee’s portion of premium.
Reportedly, the retailer also said that the furloughed employees will also be able to apply for unemployment benefits.
In March, Ross had suspended stock repurchases and slashed inventories and expenses in addition to closing stores but with the situation getting difficult each day, the retailer does not seem to have too many options other than furloughing employees.
