The sustainable initiatives continue for Gap Inc.!
The American fashion brand has now joined US Cotton Trust Protocol with the intent of attaining its target of using only 100 per cent sustainably sourced cotton by the year 2025.
Here it is important to mention that only a little over 57 per cent of cotton has been sustainably sourced by Gap since 2016.
The US Cotton Trust Protocol will help the apparel retailer by providing verified data on the sustainable practices employed in the cotton farms of the US.
The Trust Protocol, whose membership opened in October 2020, provides brands and retailers the much-needed assurance to prove that cotton in the supply chain is grown more responsibly.
Stating that continuous improvement has always been integral part of Gap’s functioning, Alice Hartley, Director of Product Sustainability for Gap Inc., said that as an American firm that’s continually committed to sustainability, joining the US Cotton Trust Protocol makes perfect sense for Gap.
Reportedly, with two thirds of US cotton not using any irrigation, joining the Trust Protocol will help Gap in its commitment to sustainable cotton and also help it better support American cotton growers.
Gap’s sourcing target is set across all its notable brands that include Gap, Old Navy, Athleta and Banana Republic.
The American retailer generates revenue of US $ 16.6 billion.
