The coronavirus pandemic may have hit Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing sector hard, but it has failed to make much of an impact on the country’s e-commerce sector it seems.
According to experts, currently at US $ 2 billion, the e-commerce sector in Bangladesh is expected to reach market size of US $ 3 billion by 2023 and is growing at a rate of 50 per cent year.
This was underlined by the experts who took part in a webinar titled ‘e-Commerce and Consumer Rights in the time of Covid 19: Challenges & Way Forward’, organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry or DCCI on 3 November (Tuesday).
Moderated by DCCI President Shams Mahmud, President of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Ghulam Rahman joined the event as special guest while Secretary of Ministry of Commerce Dr. JafarUddin was the chief guest.
Participating at the event, speakers underlined that the e-commerce trading has increased remarkably of late while adding that protection of consumer rights was a key factor towards building a sustainable e-commerce ecosystem in the country.
e-commerce has grown at a rate of 50 to 100 per cent in the last few years, reportedly maintained the General Secretary of e-CAB, Abdul Wahed Tamal to the media while adding that in the last 6 months, the growth has been an astounding 300 to 400 per cent.
The experts further added that with online businesses witnessing rapid growth, the registering process for f-commerce or Facebook-based businesses needs to be monitored and made accountable so as to protect the consumers’ rights.
