Close on heels of the Commerce Ministry detecting that some digital commerce companies in Bangladesh were asking shoppers to deposit money directly to their accounts, the ministry recently suggested the country’s central bank (Bangladesh Bank) to take step and direct banks to not accept deposits made by online shoppers to the accounts of e-commerce companies.
Media reports maintained this while adding the Commerce Ministry has, reportedly, maintained that some e-commerce platforms are resorting to same so as to evade the digital commerce guidelines 2021 it framed last month as well as to avoid the directive of the central bank.
It may be mentioned here that earlier last month, the ministry decided to hold payments made by customers to local e-commerce platforms until consumers receive the purchased items, a step which was taken subsequent to rising allegations against a number of e-commerce platforms of not delivering goods on time despite advance payments made by the consumers.
