Calvin Klein to shutter NY flagship, re-brand and trim staff too

Following Raf Simons departure from Calvin Klein as its Creative Director Officer, the fashion house has revealed active plans for a change in direction.

The American luxury brand plans to rebrand its 205W39NYC collection under a new name, design approach and creative direction, shutter its notable Manhattan flagship this Spring, and trim approximately 100 employees across the organization, including the flagship.

Debuting in 1995, the historic 18,000-square-foot, three-level store, was reimagined under Simons reign with a floor-to-ceiling installation by artist Sterling Ruby to showcase the Belgian designer’s 205W39NYC collection. Ruby had further transformed the boutique in June 2017 from its minimal design by John Pawson to an otherworldly installation.

The moves were announced as part of three key initiatives which will approximately cost USD $120 million in restructuring, adopting a digital-first consumer engagement strategy, and streamlining its men’s Calvin Klein Sportswear and Calvin Klein Jeans organizations.

The company revealed that it would be evaluating options for future retail locations and will be unveiling new consumer experiences both online and offline.

Set to expire next August, Simon’s three-year contract with Klein came to a halt when both parties decided part ways in December after Klein decided on a new brand direction that differed from Simons’ creative vision.
